The London Journal

A Time Capsule: The Original About Page

Take a trip back to 2016! This was my original ‘About’ page—a little time capsule from my twenties in London, the 2016 iteration of Michelle: an anti-counterfeit lawyer in the making with a backlog of creative tension and a passport that refused to stay shut. It was a manifesto of ‘Kuala Loco’ energy and London ambition, written by a girl who demanded her readers make fun of tall people and keep their minds wider than a church door. It is wonderfully smug, delightfully sharp, and a testament to the days when travel was a ‘snoozy bug’ that had only just begun to bite.

Hi,

YOU

When I started this blog in mid-2014, it was all about freeing myself through writing. I have a pair of (biological, not adoptive) Asian parents and a law degree. The release of a backlog of creative tension was justifiable, if not necessary. Travelling, though, was secondary. It was only a subject that I used to hold my writings together. A privilege that I have – and have since been fully exploiting – to fulfill my most unfulfilled desire to write, and for being unapologetically creative.

Hence, from mid-2015 to early 2017, this blog was largely about my adventures in a good chunk of “less-trodden”, “far-flung”, “exotic” places. Whatever adjectives one gives to a piece of land with unpronounceable name, uncontaminated by Instagram hashtag and has no airport. That was my eagerness to learn about culture, food and people. The most fearless and dramatic years of my now rather snoozy travel bug.

A few years on and a few shots of Adulthood in…

My passion for all the above still stands (albeit sometimes only on one leg), but my appetite for all things creative has grown bigger and more ferocious. I start liking arts, particularly modern paintings and provocative photography. I become more interested in fashion and the history of fashion. From mindless rants to recounts of exhibitions that I saw or events that I attended, you can find them all on this blog.

And of course, a (over)share of my life. Here, in London; there, in Kuala Loco. Or out there, somewhere, anywhere around the world. The seemingly worry-free, twentysomething jammy jetsetter.

Won’t you want a piece of this?

But mind you, before I let you in on this wildly exciting adventure, you’ll have to promise me a few things:

One – always make fun of tall people;

Two – drive badly;

Three – drink plenty;

Four – master the language of sarcasm;

Five, lastly and most importantly –

Keep your mind wide, WIDE open like the church door.

Can you do that?

If yes to all the above, then pack up, hop on and let’s go!
